Abstract

Does leadership come from service? Based on the job demand-resource model, this study examined the direct impact of servant leadership on university counsellors’ organizational commitment, as well as the mediating role of work engagement in this relationship. The study included 446 university counsellors from Zhejiang Province, China. Three measurement scales, specifically on servant leadership, organizational commitment, and work engagement, were employed. To analyze the correlation between these variables, a structural equation model was constructed using SPSS. Servant leadership positively impacted organizational commitment and work engagement, whose mediating role was also confirmed. This study proposes and validates an integrated model wherein college counselors' perception of servant leadership influences their organizational commitment. The findings hold both theoretical and practical significance and have implications for improving the work environment of counsellors through advocating servant leadership in management.
