A Comparative Analysis of ChatGPT Feedback Impact on EFL Writing: Home Institution Students vs. Exchange Students
Contenido principal del artículo
Resumen
This study examines the effectiveness of ChatGPT-generated feedback on the English writing skills of two distinct groups of university students- 15 home students from the Czech Republic and nine international exchange students. The main objective was to assess how ChatGPT influenced specific aspects of students’ writing, including grammar, conciseness, use of reporting verbs and linking phrases, and the inclusion of key information. Through a mixed-methods approach, the study combined pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, and content analysis to evaluate improvements in writing performance and use experiences. The results show that both groups benefited from ChatGPT feedback, though in slightly different ways. Home students demonstrated notable improvements in conciseness, inclusion of key information, and the use of linking phrases, while exchange students improved most in the use of linking phrases, reporting verbs, and grammar. Despite these gains, grammar remained a persistent challenge, particularly for home students. The study also revealed discrepancies between students’ self-assessed strengths and ChatGPT’s evaluations, highlighting the tool’s value in promoting more objective writing assessment. These results highlight the potential of integrating tools like ChatGPT into foreign language education to improve students’ foreign language writing skills. The comparative analysis also emphasizes the need for culturally responsive AI implementation and teacher facilitation to address feedback inconsistencies and maximize learning outcomes.
